Barnaby did not have time to dwell on Admiral Fluffles because the kitchen floor suddenly dissolved into a swirling vortex of blueberry gelatin. The Great Gelatin IncidentHe plunged downward, clutching Kevin the badger under his arm, until they landed with a soft plop on a highway made entirely of expired library cards. The sky above was a vibrant shade of plaid, and the clouds looked suspiciously like mashed potatoes.Standing in the middle of the road was an eight-foot-tall flamingo wearing a tweed suit and holding a clipboard."Name and favorite type of moss?" the flamingo demanded, clicking a ballpoint pen with its beak."Barnaby P. Sprogget, and I prefer the damp velvet variety," Barnaby said, smoothing his mustache. The flamingo nodded solemnly, checked a box on the clipboard, and said, "Excellent. You are just in time for your shift at the Cloud Factory."The Mechanical SkyBefore Barnaby could explain that he was a retired umbrella inspector, he was whisked away by a passing gust of wind that smelled strongly of peppermint. He found himself standing inside a massive, hollow mountain filled with giant brass gears, bubbling cauldrons of steam, and rows of bicycles hooked up to generators.Dozens of penguins in overalls were furiously pedaling the bicycles, which caused the cauldrons to burp out fluffy white shapes into the sky.A tiny penguin with a gold megaphone ran up to Barnaby. "We are short-handed! The afternoon cumulus clouds are behind schedule, and the sunset is going to look terrible if we don't get more vapor into sector four!"Barnaby, always a man of action when dampness was involved, handed Kevin the badger to a nearby penguin and jumped onto an empty tandem bicycle. He began pedaling with all his might. As he did, the gears groaned, and a massive cloud shaped like a giant teapot burst forth from the mountain’s chimney, floating majestically into the plaid sky.The Escape on a SconeThe penguins cheered, showering Barnaby with confetti made of old train tickets. However, the celebration was cut short. The mountain began to vibrate violently. The blueberry gelatin from earlier was rising, bubbling up through the floorboards of the factory."The structural integrity of Tuesday is collapsing entirely!" Kevin the badger yelled (which was surprising, as he had never spoken before).Barnaby looked around for an escape route. Spotting a giant baking sheet near the employee lounge, he grabbed a massive, leftover scone from the town square baker, threw it into the rising gelatin tide, and climbed aboard with Kevin. Using a broken umbrella as a paddle, they steered the scone through the sticky blue currents, aiming for a glowing white rip in the fabric of the plaid sky.
